Course Content – Crisis Media Training

Our crisis media training courses are tailored around you. Depending on the crisis you could face trade and national press or TV and radio broadcasters, so this training can prepare you for all possible situations. This course is normally run for those with some interview experience but our experienced team can also design the crisis session for those who are new to dealing with the media.

The crisis media courses generally include some background theory to explain how the journalists and reporters act when they cover these types of story, but the focus is on realistic and testing practice interviews, all followed with feedback to improve your approach. Below, as a guide, we provide an outline to show what we advise covering in your training session.

Due to the nature of this media training we generally sign confidentiality agreements before we start working on your course.

The Theory

  • An introduction to the media in a crisis: Why should you talk to the media in a crisis / The news organisations you could face / The difference a crisis makes for the media / The way journalists operate when covering a crisis story
  • Preparing your approach: Refining your key messages / Researching the audience and journalist / Setting your agenda / The soundbite
  • During the interview: Bridging and other question handling techniques / Body language and voice control / Managing nerves / Dos and don’ts with the media / Handling press conferences

The Practice Interviews

The interviews we design for the crisis media training sessions are testing, realistic and relevant. This is to ensure that, whatever sort of interview situation spokespeople face in the outside world, they will be prepared and confident.

Depending on your requirements, we will run a series of filmed interviews, usually covering a number of the following types of format:

  • Telephone – replicating calling into the studio
  • Video conference – practicing interviews from your computer
  • Face to Face – rehearsing the typical studio format
  • Down the line – facing the camera, using an earpiece
  • Doorstep – being faced by reporters outside your office
